This is not a complete index of names from the volumes. Some individuals may be mentioned in the letters but not "identified" by our editors. You may also check the Library of Congress, Papers of George Washington site to search for letters to specific individuals.

Identifications are prepared by the editorial staff of The Papers of George Washington and included in the footnotes of each completed volume. Identifications range from brief citations of birth and death dates to longer accountings of an individuals' position, accomplishments, or exploits. This on-line index contains a list of names and citations to assist in searches. The full-text of each identification is currently available only in the hard-copy volumes.
