Notes
1. GW also has in his letter book "A List of Lands &ca given into the Clerk of Fairfax County--1761 to pay Taxes in the year 1762." The tax was two shillings per hundred acres and GW reported 8,505 acres: 4,940 acres in six tracts at Mount Vernon, 1,250 in King George County, and 2,315 in Frederick County. See Memorandum: List of Quitrents, 1762, printed below.
2. Four of the people named--Edward Violet, John Foster, Samuel Johnson, and Josias Cook--were white overseers of plantations, and two of the carpenters named were white employees. In addition to the runaway Neptune (see Advertisement for Runaway Slaves, 11 Aug. 1761, n.4), the names of Dublin and Grace, both of Muddy Hole farm in 1761, are missing from GW's List of Tithables, c.9 June 1762.
